Training

Understanding illicit trade and illicit financial flows is crucial for any effort to improve law enforcement operations or legislative and regulatory frameworks. This is relevant for public officials as well as for private actors. Indeed, the growing complexities of international markets assigned a special role to firms and individuals in illicit trade processes. Private actors are often required to be aware of illicit practices and they are held accountable when they either do not follow or are not aware of public and international trade regulations.

The Illicit Trade Group can provide training online, at your premises or at the University of Groningen. The objective of training courses is two-fold. On the one hand, we aim to contribute to build the capacity of states and public institutions to address challenges to counter illicit trade practices. On the other hand, our training courses intend to increase the societal resilience to illicit trade practices by increasing awareness and understanding of private actors and the civil society as a whole.

The unique aspect of our activities is the holistic approach to illicit trade from theory to practice. Our training courses are designed to be highly interactive, and to provide a hands-on learning experience for all involved, but we also ensure that participants will be offered broader theoretical insights on the complexity and interconnections of a globalizing world. Our trainers are experienced university lecturers and practicing specialists, which guarantees an approach that is both relevant to practice and theoretically sound.

More specifically, we can provide training in topics such as:

Illicit trade – the basics

Wildlife trafficking and environmental crime

Money laundering and terrorist financing

Illegal drug trafficking

International sanctions and export compliance

International fraud and corruption

Our training courses are available in several modules: from half a day to several days. Any course can be tailored-made according to the topic and the audience. If you would like to have more information, you can contact us.
