Sanctions Workshop 2022

Thursday, November 24, 2022 16:00 – Saturday, November 26, 2022 14:00

From Cradle to Grave: the Policy Cycle of EU Restrictive Measures

From the 24th to the 26th of November 2022, around 40 sanctions experts from different countries and different research backgrounds met in Groningen, The Netherlands. The goal was to share knowledge, exchange ideas, network and brainstorm in a multidisciplinary setting.

On the first day, the researchers had the opportunity to join us for a tour through the historic center of Groningen and a welcome dinner. The second and third day focused on discussing different aspects of EU sanctions and developing the sanctions network.

The workshop was structured in several parallel sessions, composed of researchers with different backgrounds, such as law, political science and economics. Each session focused on specific segments of the EU policy cycle, from agenda-setting to implementation.

During the last day of the workshop, we focused on brainstorming about the further development of the sanctions network. During three different sessions, we discussed sanctions related to education, grants and projects.

The sanctions workshop was made possible by the Illicit Trade Group in collaboration with Globalisation Studies Groningen, the Agricola School for Sustainable Development (formerly Sustainable Society), alongside the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Economics at the University of Groningen, and Ghent University.
