Dr. Tristan Kohl is an associate professor in international economics at the University of Groningen, Faculty of Economic and Business in the Netherlands. He specializes in empirical studies of international trade policy and its effects on international trade, foreign direct investment, economic growth and global value chains.

Dr. Kohl’s research interests cover the design and economic effects of regional and preferential trade agreements, economic sanctions, Brexit, the (enlargement of the) European Union, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), and global value chains. In terms of his policy experience, Dr. Kohl has written a research report on the expected economic outcomes of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) for the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was discussed in the Dutch Parliament. Dr. Kohl also serves as ad-hoc academic advisor to government institutes (DNB, CPB) and a private economic research group (SEO Amsterdam).

While the empirical trade literature has long revealed that globalization creates winners and losers, shedding light on the darker side of how policy reforms may affect those hurt by globalization remains an urgent matter for academia and policy makers. To that end, Dr. Kohl contributes to the ITG in terms of his knowledge of national and international trade policies and experience in building and analyzing large datasets on international economic activities.
