Iva Pesa is an Assistant Professor in Contemporary History at the University of Groningen. Her research has centred around the social and environmental history of mining in Central Africa (Zambia and DR Congo). Based on oral histories and archival research, she asks how people react to the environmental transformation of resource extraction. Between 2022 and 2027 she will lead an ERC funded project which compares the environmental histories of oil drilling in Nigeria, copper mining in Zambia, and gold mining in South Africa. In connection to the Illicit Trade group, she asks how international environmental standards are applied and evaded within the global value chains of resource extraction.
