PhD Students

At the University of Groningen PhD candidates are offered excellent opportunities for post-graduate study and training, as well as preparation for a career after graduation. The Illicit Trade Group provides expertise and networking opportunities for PhD students pursuing doctorate degree in areas and research topics related to illicit trade and connecting security issues. While the Illicit Trade Group doesn’t provide you with the financial resources, we can connect you with several experts within the University of Groningen who are working in the field of illicit trade and give you the platform to further your research.

Internship

The Illicit Trade Group (ITG) provides internship opportunities for students and recent graduates. Our programs involve a wide range of activities to engage and broaden the knowledge and independency of interns in illicit trade practices and related issues. Interns will focus on a selection from the following tasks:  

  • Communicate with ITG experts

  • Communicate with ITG partners (Agricola School for Sustainable Development)

  • Maintain and expand ITG experts network at the UG and beyond

  • Identify key strategic partners in Latin America, Asia and Africa

  • Update the website and ITG social media channels

  • Coordinate and develop capacity building projects

  • Carry out interviews to be recorded and placed on our Youtube channel

  • Co-organize events related to Illicit Trade (webinars, public lectures, movie screenings etc) 

  • Collect information and support the creation of new educational activities on illicit trade

  • Mapping new ITG experts in the university 

  • Researching new grant opportunities in collaboration with the grant officer 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Completed BA programme, preferably in Social Sciences, Communications or Law, or any other programme relevant to Illicit Trade

  • Sound organizational skills, and ability to handle several responsibilities and work under tight time constraints

  • Ability to work without direct supervision, paying close attention to detail and bearing independent responsibility 

  • Ability to work with website designing software and/or willingness to learn

  • Strong networking and communication skills

  • Ability to write and communicate at an intermediate level of English 

Internship conditions

Internships are for four months in the following periods: 01.09 until 31.12. and 01.01. until 15.05. Internships are for 20 hours per week and take place on-site in the Harmonie Building at the University of Groningen. Internships are unpaid.
